Case Story: Fish Delousing Vessels

Background

Fishery regulations mandate that salmon are treated, or deloused, “before the number of lice exceeds a certain limit”. A key goal within the industry is to limit and replace the use of chemical delousing through alternative, environmentally friendly methods.

Vard’s delousing vessels, which are to be used at fish farms all along the Norwegian coastline, use a new design with a delousing capacity of 3,000-4,000 tons of salmon per hour. Vard’s approach ensures sufficient delousing without harming the salmon themselves.

The vessels’ delousing process includes five hydraulic delousing lines, guaranteeing 100% chemical-free treatment of salmon lice. After processing, the vessel collects all the processing water and purifies it (eradicating the lice and lice eggs) to prevent further spreading.

Challenge

As the delousing vessels, do not travel above three knots, they are not subject to conventional maritime power quality regulations. However, as there are many drives onboard controlling multiple pumps, the risk was that their collective load would generate a high level of harmonics. In the worst-case scenario, the load could harm valuable equipment, such as computers, LEDs, sensitive electronics, and more. Not wanting to jeopardize operations and seeking to protect and secure this equipment, Vard sought a harmonics compensation solution.

Solution

As power quality compensation was not specified from the outset, Vard needed a solution that could easily be retrofitted without significant changes to the vessels’ infrastructure. Another requirement was a quick installation, without interruption to the already constrained timeline.

Based on these demands, two ADF P100’s were mounted in separate locations onboard, suiting the needs of the vessel. Additionally, the Sensorless Control option eliminated the need for CTs (current transformers), thereby bypassing a now unnecessary step in the installation process.

Results

Since installation, the equipment is working and the customer has experienced smooth operations. With ADF on board, this 100% chemical free delousing fleet is fully productive and operational along the Norwegian coast.
